“Son, you're up early.”

I pour coffee into the empty cup next to mine at the sound of my father’s entry,

"Yeah, well Jace is comin’ by soon for an early round of golf. Somethin’ important, he woke me up at two in the mornin'."

My father's bare feet walk the distance from the metal fridge to where I stand across the 15 meter expanse of stainless steel and dark wood kitchen décor with his empty coffee cup in hand.

He takes the refill I've already poured from my outstretched hand and leans against the marble table. He takes a sip from the mug and nods, "I see. And what's so important that it couldn't wait until a decent hour?"

I shrug, "He didn't say much, but it sounded urgent."

My father raises a skeptical eyebrow, "I hope it's nothing too serious. You have a lot on your plate as is."

I nod in agreement, "Yes, I do. But I'll handle it. Always do."

He smiles and pats my shoulder, "That's my boy. Always in control and on top of things."

A twinge of guilt makes me cringe at his words. I may be in control of my part in the empire and business, but my personal life is a different story.

My father's keen gaze falls upon me as he takes a sip from his coffee mug, “Any word from your sister? She’s supposed to leave this morning.”

“She's fine, Dad,” I respond, trying to keep my tone casual. My sister was as fine as any teenage girl without a mother.

"She'll be back tonight, Casandra’s picking her up."

He nods, but I can sense the underlying question in his eyes. "And what about Dainy?"

I shift uncomfortably, "She's with Reagan for the time being."

"Is that so?" He raises an eyebrow, "Just for now?"

I chuckle in spite of myself, "You know how it is. Things change."

He gives a knowing nod and turns to the fridge to prepare breakfast. But I can't shake the feeling that he knows more than he's letting on. The thought of Dainy being with Reagan, even temporarily, doesn't sit well with me. It's only a matter of time before she comes back to me.

As if reading my thoughts, my father says, "You know, sometimes it's good to let go and let things happen. You can't control everything, Sabastian. Sometimes, the best things in life come as a surprise."

I nod, trying to take in his words, but my mind is already preoccupied with the looming meeting with Jace. I finish my coffee, eat breakfast before heading out to meet with Jace, wondering what it could be that he wants to talk about so urgently.
